Das Funktionsprinzip der Funkuhr. Die genaueste Uhr der Welt ist die Cäsium- Zeitbasis der Physikalisch-Technischen Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig (PTB). Sie ist so präzise, daß erst in 1 Million Jahren die Gangabweichung von 1 Sekunden zu erwarten ist. Die von der Zeitbasis funkgesteuerte Funkuhr geht deshalb absolut genau. Vom amtlichen Deutschen Normalfrequenz- und Zeichensender DCF77, der sich in Mainfligen (24km südöstlich von Frankfurt/ Main) befindet, erhält die Funkuhr über Langwelle 77,5 kHz Zeittelegramme. 
Dieser Sender hat eine Reichweite von durchschnittlich 1.500 km. Bisher wurde dieser Sender vorwiegend für wissenschaftliche Zwecke, für Navigation und Raumfahrt genutzt. Jetzt kann diese Präzision mit der Funkuhr unentgeltlich genutzt werden. Die Funkuhr empfängt den Sender DCF 77 über das eingebaute Antennensystem überall dort, wo z.B. mit einem guten Kofferradio ein brauchbarer Langwellenempfang möglich ist. Vielfach kann die Funkuhr noch in wesentlich größerem Abstand zum Sender betrieben werden, wobei jedoch die örtlichen Verhältnisse eine wesenliche Rolle spielen. 
Der in der Funkuhr eingebaute Computer verarbeitet die empfangenen Zeittelegramme und steuert danach die Zeiger vollautomatisch. Einmal vollautomatisch über Funk richtig eingestellt läuft die Funkuhr mit einer eigenen internen hochpräzisen 32 kHz- Zeitbasis weiter und vergleicht 1 mal pro Stunde die angezeigte Zeit mit den Zeitinformation des Senders DCF 77. Aufgund der sehr hohen Ganggenauigkeit der eingebauten Zeitbasis wäre sogar ein Zeitvergleich nur einmal pro Tag ausreichend. Durch den 24maligen Zeitvergleich pro Tag spielt es für die Präzision der Funkuhr keine Rolle, ob - bedingt durch verschiedene denkbare Störungen (Gewitter, zeitweilige Senderabschaltungen, nicht funkentstörte Haushaltsgeräte, Fernsehgeräte usw.) - der eine oder andere Zeitvergleich nicht erfolgen kann. 
Ein weiterer, sehr großer Vorteil der Funkuhr ist die sekundenschnelle, vollautomatische Umstellung von Winter- auf Sommerzeit und umgekehrt.
